Attitude and Behavior in Business
Inventing good reasons for our beliefs and behaviors, is something that us marketers are expert in, aren’t we?
We develop various reasons in order to solve the inner conflicts which result from our failures and average performances.
Do we search for our mistakes whenever a campaign fails and work much harder on promoting it, or do we develop a conflicting impulse and avoid facing the truth? For the majority, marketers automatically lessen the reasons for their failures because of:
• Google slap
• I am still learning
• I missed the last $5k seminar by that guru
• Lack of JV follow up
• Poor email deliverability
• Sales letter conversion
• Weak offer
It is possible during our day to day business life to show some degree of disappointment towards others. However, a majority of the time we tend to become angry when people do exactly the same to us. However, if this is delivered by someone that we are unable to challenge or refute, we find other people around us to take that anger out on. In most situations, this tends to be a family member or a friend.
When a person transfers emotion to another individual who has absolutely no connection to the problem, person or circumstance, then this behavior is described as “Displacement”.
In the times when the process of small business owners are not going quite as planned, good self esteem can be a challenge.
It is very often the case that Internet marketers have too much on their plate at any given time. There are always cases whereby Internet marketers have too many websites to develop, or too many projects to launch, or even tight deadlines whereby sleepless nights are experienced. Due to the amount of work and dedication that is necessary when it comes to Internet marketing, it is always possible to forget common things such as mailing letters, collecting the kids from day care, or even paying bills.
When questioned about these particular things, we very often blame this behavior on others. For example, when asked by your wife questions about something important that you forgot to do during the day, the blame is very often turned around and placed upon her or something else that prevented your from undertaking the particular task. This is because you wish to escape in order to safe your self esteem.
This act is called “Projection” and is yet again another variation of the defense mechanism. It is an unconscious process whereby one attributes their faults or undesirable thoughts towards others in order to safeguard their self esteem.
Another defense mechanism which is commonly exhibited by aspiring marketers is called “Compensation”. This is whereby they attempt to make up for their weaknesses by being determined to gain recognition. This can be achieved by paying established marketers large sums of money with an underlying motive of undertaking joint ventures with those marketers. Trying to attract friends and customers by driving expensive cars and by posting pictures on sales pages etc is common behavior.
