The Anatomy Of A Successful Video Landing Page: An Experiment

If you are a PPC marketer you already know the importance, relevance, significance of landing pages. Most marketers build landing pages for search engines, not for humans. Which in my opinion is wrong.

If you are hearing about a “Landing Page” for the first time… Here is how Wikipedia Defines it..

In online marketing a landing page, sometimes known as a lead capture page, is the page that appears when a potential customer clicks on an advertisement or a search-engine result link. The page will usually display content that is a logical extension of the advertisement or link, and that is optimized to feature specific keywords or phrases for indexing by search engines.

In pay per click (PPC) campaigns, the landing page will also be customized to measure the effectiveness of different advertisements. By adding a parameter to the linking URL, marketers can measure advertisement effectiveness based on relative click-through rates.

Recently I was listening to an audio Interview where in one of the listeners asked a question to the presenter about “Landing Pages” and the best way to optimize them.

The presenter provided some great tips on landing page optimization but missed out talking about the possibilities of “Video” on landing pages.

Over the years I have tested & experimented all kinds of landing pages. Auto generated keyword embedded pages, Custom hand created long sales copies, Short squeeze pages. Xsitepro templates, Wordpress Sales letter themes etc

I have made several observations along the process.

    • Videos convert well if you are selling a high end product in the back end
    • Videos less than 10 minutes convert better than long ones.
    • A video promising another video upon optin converts better than a static text squeeze page that promises a video.
    • Videos don’t need to be 1280P 3CCD HI-Def AVHCD compatible.. In other words they don’t have to be of Fran Kern quality. A simple monitor mounted camera is good enough. These days I use FLIP for everything. Most marketers sweat too much about all the nitty grities they missout on possibilites.
    • Flash Video, Dazzling animated slides with voice makeover doesn’t increase conversions, at least they did not in my case.

Here is an example of one of my wordpress video landing pages, the best converting landing page I have ever created to the date. I am personally not happy with the over all design, but it coverts like crazy. It has all the above mentioned elements to it..

kickstartblogging-640

A simple video that represents a character not a marketing message. A shy optin page that promises an additional tip. A header graphic that establishes authority. A strong headline that grabs attention and builds curiosity. All the necessary disclosures to avoid a manual rejections.

Yes, its based on a wordpress blog on a theme that I custom developed.

Hop on to KickStartBlogging.com to see this squeeze page in action. Once on the page, scroll down a little to see the entire transcript of the video.

Guess why the transcript?

You are right to avoid the google slap.

Hello Srini, I'm a student 20yrs old from Indonesia. I like your landing page so much. I'm newbie on internet marketing. can you tell we how to create such a fantastic landing page. What wordpress did you use? And where did you host those video? on wordpress ?

    Hi Ferdie,

Great to see one more 20 year old in the business. When you start early you have time on your side.

There are many ways you can accomplish this. The example I show you here on this post that site is based on wordpress. The version doesn't matter as much. The video is hosted on Amazon S3 and I use Kimili video plugin to embed the video into the blog post.

You can host the video on a directory on your hosting server, but the downside is the maintenance, availability and bandwidth. For a minimal cost Amazon will do it for you.

    Best of luck!

    Cheers!

Your video landing page is nice, great.
As for this subjet I'm currently tesiting my first video landing page. Well, actually it's not so "human centered", it's just me speaking over a screen capture.
But I think it will be fine as a start.
On the other hand, your article makes me more and more willing to develop my own video lessons serie and put it out there.
thanks, once more you are inspiring me.
    Bye
  • The demands of internet on individual marketers have evolved over the years. 10 years ago all a marketer had to do was sit for hours and bloat the meta tags. 5 years ago it was all about content, all one had to do was sit down and chrun as much as possible.

But today its a different story..if one doesn't spend 30 minutes a day in front of the camera, it will become hard to participate in the competition.
