Simplifying Blogging..Can Average Content Make You Money?

Today there are blogs devoted to almost every subject imaginable. You can read blogs on arts and crafts, politics and news or even unusual “niche” topics. Recently Jonathan Smith of Jubrrax.com stated that in the long-term scenario, even the most simplistic blog on the most general subject is still capable of making money.

This is good news if you have a blog, even if you would describe your blog as something less than average. Not everyone can afford the time to publish a 3,000 word blog article on a major social issue. Sometimes you may be able to post a brief 300 word article, or perhaps even a microblog of 140 characters. The good news here is that even an average blog can still make money. Even if you are not regularly posting great content (as in magazine caliber) you still have the potential to make some generous change from a blog.

Ace Blogger Darren Rowse in my interview with him at Blogworld 2008 categorically mentioned that over time with consistency, even mediocre content will make money.

A lot of how much money you can make will depend on the season. If it is a low season as far as content goes, then your blog may not be as uninteresting as you think. On the other hand, if you have a niche interest or are an avid reader on a given topic, you may be surprised at how often your blog is visited by web viewers looking for entertainment or educations.

How do you go about making money on a blog? You can make money with advertising programs (such as AdSense, though there are many more to consider) or with ad networks like RSS advertising, exclusive sponsorships, affiliate programs, digital assets and even donations.

In fact, some experienced bloggers have even branched out into consulting and speaking!

Never underestimate the value of a blog even if you can’t think of great content every single post. The key to writing a successful blog over the long term is to be consistent with your posts, be genuine in dealing with commentators and with your reporting, and to connect with as many subscribers as possible. Eventually, if you are able to maintain some traffic, you may even be able to sell the blog for a good price.

Remember though, that though theoretically even an average content blog could earn money if you keep it going on a regular basis, you can earn even more money by doing some online research on the topic of your choice. You’re a blogger! No one expects you to be an expert, just someone interested in a subject and someone serious about your intentions to write on it.
